From 22 May to 12 June, Jayoung Bang’s and Yunjun Lee’s ‘NONZEROSUM SOCIETY’ exhibition was held at Insa Art Space in Wonseo-dong.

Q. The tombstone or monument at the entrance of In Memory Of the Last Friendship (2012), FARM Revisited (2012) and the text message on the second floor, Revision History X (2012), satirize George Orwell’s Animal Farm (1945). Why did you choose Animal Farm as your theme?

We used the theme of Animal Farm to interpret the things we experienced and other past events as we collaborate various works. It is an old, instructive story, but it implies relatable themes. It helped us find new interpretations in the novel.

Q. Unlike the zerosum theory, in which if there is a winner, there is a loser, the nonzerosum theory has two sides – either everyone wins or everyone fails. What does the nonzerosum mean in this exhibition?

Zerosum and nonzerosum theories seem like simple principles, but in real life, nonzerosum works in the strained relations with zerosum, so it is quite complicated to explain the meaning of nonzerosum. The positive perspective of nonzerosum—win-win situations—can be interpreted in different contexts according to the conditions of the surrounding environment. Sometimes, even if the other person won and I lost, in fact I may not have lost. Likewise, even when I won, it doesn’t really mean victory. The complicated matrix of relationships is not easy to explain in terms of collaboration works. We’d like to visually express the complicated meaning of the matrix through this nonzerosum exhibition. We all have to cooperate with each other in our daily lives and we wanted to fragmentarily enumerate the happenings in the process of direct or indirect collaborations. It may be a personal question, but we think it’s interesting how the nonzerosum principle has worked in a certain direction throughout human history.

Q. You two are working under the name Bang & Lee. What kind of synergy do you get through collaborations?

We receive positive energy from working together. In addition, through collaborative works, our working process and results become more elaborate. Our strong points become bigger as we supplement each other’s weaknesses. We can maximize our common value and synergy through cooperation and collaboration. In the field of visual art, especially in new media and digital media genres, collaboration works are necessary and the connections build naturally. New media art has many different qualities; these attributes are based on computer, network, identity, and collaborations. However, other than using new technology, new media art is also based on critique about the new technology and media. Collaboration is one of the traditional forms of art. Gilbert & George (a British artist duo) is a classic example of this. Currently, the number of collective artist groups of two or more people is increasing.

Q. How do you divide your work?

We do everything together. Of course, in order to reduce the time and labor in the process, we each have our worn paths; this is just a practical way to improve the effectiveness of our work. Collaborations don’t always ensure equal relationships in all groups of artists, but they are all fundamentally based on equality. So collaborations can’t really work well in a vertical structure. Even when some problems occur or the goals and forms of work change in the process of collaborations, if we were to try to cooperate in a vertical structure, it would be hard to motivate ourselves and remain be creative. We can’t really expect to work smoothly without equality. We should understand and respect each other for idealistic collaborations, unlike joint production done out of necessity. We can’t forget about our friendship, which is one of the values we respect the most, however, we should also take morality into consideration first. If you don’t understand the importance of morality, it will be hard to achieve the results you want to have through collaborations. We try to exclude the things we don’t agree about in our working process and get rid of unnecessary conflicts through deep conversations. In addition, we try to support each other and think highly of the working process itself. The quality of our work is important, but the process of communication in order to achieve our goals is also work in and of itself. We try to respect each other as partners throughout our working process. Since each process of collaboration leads to results, we try our best to sincerely communicate and respect each other.

Q. What are your future plans?

Starting after this exhibition, we will develop our upcoming projects further and more specifically. In this exhibition, we displayed only one perspective of our work, as a prologue. In our next exhibition, we will show another episode. We will keep doing projects as a critique of social media, which is a current hot issue. We will unveil our new project in the fall, when we will deliver messages like happenings in art or current issues, rather than merely a sequel of our previous project.

지난 5월 22일(화)부터 6월 12일(화)까지 원서동 인사미술 공간(Insa Art Space)에서 방자영(Jayoung Bang)과 이윤준(Yunjun Lee)으로 구성된 Bang & Lee의 넌제로섬 사회(NONZEROSUM SOCIETY)전시가 열렸다.

Q. 입구에 놓인 묘비 혹은 기념비 ‘In Memory Of The last Friendship’과 ‘FARM Revisited’, 2층에 설치된 텍스트 메시지 ‘Revision History X’등 전시는 주로 조지 오웰(George Orwell)의 동물농장(The Animal Farm)을 풍자했다. 왜 동물 농장이었나?

그간 여러 형태의 협업을 하는 과정에서 경험한 일들과 지난 사건을 해석한 작업을 동물농장의 주제를 빌어 전개한 것이다. 오래된 이야기이고 교훈적인 내용이 부각될 수 있지만 여전히 관련성 있는 주제를 함축하고 있기 때문에 소설 속에서 새로운 해석의 가능성을 발견할 수 있었던 것 같다.

Q. 승자가 있으면 반드시 패자가 존재한다는 제로섬(zerosum) 이론과 달리 넌제로섬(nonzerosum)은 모두 승리할 수도, 모두 실패할 수도 있는 양면성을 갖기도 한다. 이번 전시에서 넌제로섬이 의미하는 것은 무엇인가?

제로섬, 넌제로섬 이론은 간단한 원리처럼 설명될 수 있는 것 같지만 현실에서는 넌제로섬이 제로섬의 긴장관계에서 작동하기 때문에 상당히 복잡한 부분이어서 넌제로섬의 의미를 설명하기 쉽지 않다. 넌제로섬의 긍정적인 면, 즉 서로 윈-윈(win-win)하는 상황이 주변 역학관계에 의해 다른 맥락에 놓일 수 있다. 때로 상대가 이기고, 내가 졌어도 사실은 지지 않은 것일 수 있다. 마찬가지로 내가 이겼다고 해도 승리가 아닐 수도 있다. 복잡한 그물망처럼 관계가 형성되어 있어 협업을 통한 관계만으로 설명하기 어려운 부분이다. 네트워크가 확장된 개념에서 협업의 정의만으로 설명하기에는 부족한 의미를 이번 넌제로섬 사회 전시에서 일부분 시각적인 언어로 표현하고 싶었다. 우리 모두 협력하며 살고 있고 따라서 직접적이든 간접적이든 협업을 하는 과정에서 일어날 수 있는 이야기를 단편적으로 나열한 부분이 있다. 개인적인 질문일 수도 있지만, 우리가 속한 사회의 성격뿐 아니라 인류 역사의 특정한 방향으로써 넌제로섬 원리가 작용해 온 부분이 흥미롭다.

Q. 두 사람은 Bang & Lee로 활동 중이다. 협업으로 얻는 시너지는 무엇인가?

서로 공동작업을 하면서 많은 긍정적인 에너지를 얻는다. 그뿐만 아니라 협업을 통해 작업 프로세스와 결과가 더 정교해진다. 서로 부족한 부분을 채워나가며 장점이 되는 부분은 더 커진다. 이는 어떤 분야든 협업을 통한 시너지를 기대하고 서로 협력함으로써 공동의 가치를 더욱 극대화 시키는 것과 다르지 않다. 시각 예술 분야에서 특히 뉴 미디어 장르로 분류되거나 디지털 미디어를 사용하는 예술은 프로젝트를 진행하는 데 있어 반드시 협력이 요구되거나 협업 관계가 자연스럽게 형성되는 것 같다. 뉴 미디어 아트의 속성에는 여러 가지가 있을 수 있다. 성격을 규정하는 데 있어서 컴퓨터 베이스드, 네트워크, 아이덴티티 같은 몇몇 특징과 더불어 협업을 기반으로 이루어진다는 부분이 있다. 그러나 뉴 테크놀로지를 사용하는 것뿐만 아니라 새로운 기술과 미디어에 대한 크리틱의 성격이 클 것이다. 협업은 예술에서도 오랫동안 이루어져 온 형태 중 하나다. 길버트와 조지(Gilbert & George)처럼 오래된 예도 있고 현재 2인 이상으로 구성된 컬렉티브로 활동하는 예술가 그룹이 많아진 것 같다. 

Q. 작업 분배는 어떻게 하나?

작업의 모든 과정을 함께 한다. 물론 제작하는 과정에서 시간과 노동을 줄이기 위해 각자 맡아서 진행하는 부분이 있다. 이것은 프랙티컬한 측면이고 효율성을 높이기 위한 방법일 뿐이다. 어느 집단에나 협업의 형태가 반드시 평등한 관계를 보장하는 건 아니지만, 평등한 관계를 바탕으로 이루어지는 부분이 크다. 협업이란 공동의 목적과 공유를 바탕으로 즉, 동등함을 바탕으로 하기 때문에 수직구조에서는 작용하기 어렵다. 또 협업에서 문제가 발생하거나 목적, 형태가 바뀌거나 해서 수직적인 구조로 협력이 이루어진다면 동기 부여가 자생적으로 이루어지지 않아 창의성이 떨어질 우려가 있다. 평등관계에 대한 동의 없이 협력이 원활하게 이루어지기 기대하기 어려울 것이다. 필요에 의한 공동 프로덕션(joint production)이 이루어질 수 있지만 이상적인 협업을 위해 서로에 대한 이해와 존중이 바탕이 되어야 한다. 우리가 존중하는 가치의 한 형태, 즉 우정에 대해 생각하지 않을 수 없다. 또, 그 이전에 우선적으로 고려되어야 하는 건 도덕성(morality)이다. 도덕적인(moral) 개념이 없으면 결과적으로 협업에서 기대하는 바를 이루기가 어렵다. 우리 스스로 깊은 대화를 통해 작업 과정에서 서로 동의하지 않는 부분은 배제하고 불필요한 잡음을 제거하려는 노력을 한다. 또 서로 기대하는 부분에 대해서는 최대한 끌어주고 지원하며 작업하는 과정 자체를 중요하게 생각한다. 작업의 퀄리티도 중요하지만 커뮤니케이션을 통해 이루어 나가는 과정 자체가 작업이다. 이런 모든 시간과 사건의 연속 과정에서 작업 파트너로서 존중해야 할 부분은 반드시 지켜나가려고 한다. 공동작업이 이루어지는 과정들이 모여 결과를 이루기 때문에 서로 진심으로 소통하고 존중하며 작업하려고 한다.

Q. 앞으로 계획

이번 전시를 시작으로 앞으로 진행할 프로젝트를 조금 더 구체적으로 전개할 예정이다. 일종의 프롤로그로써 작업의 한 단면을 보여주었다면 다가오는 전시에서 또 다른 에피소드를 들려주는 것처럼 설치를 구성하려고 한다. 그리고 현재 이슈가 되고 있는 소셜 미디어의 크리틱으로써 프로젝트를 지속적으로 진행할 계획인데 지난 작업의 연작 성격이라기보다는 지금 현재 일어나는 사건처럼, 또 예술에서의 해프닝처럼 메시지를 전달할 수 있는 프로젝트를 다가오는 가을에 선보일 예정이다.
